pre-diabetes? Dr. opinion also please.

by krickett, Feb 19, 2007 12:00AM
hello. I could really use some advice. Both my parents have type 2 diabetes they were diagnosed in their 50's. I am 26 years old and have always had a blood sugar level somewhere in the 90 range. Over the holidays just for fun I checked my sugar using my mother's glucoseometer and it was 160! I have never had it this high so I borrowed an extra monitor my mom had and tested my self over a couple of days. The first day I ate like  I normally would, my level started out normal but by mid afternoon was up to 150 then back to about 100 by bed time. The next day I payed more attention to what I ate and my glucose stayed under 120. I have also had BV for about 2 years now and I have heard that infections can also raise glucose levels. Should I be concerned?  I know I should just go to the doctor and have them test me but I can't really afford it right now, esp. if this is just me being paranoid. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Diabetes is not a disease you want to play around with.  My advice is seek medical help.

Your doctor would want to do an HgA1C and probably a 2 hour post prandial test to see what your average blood sugar is and how quickly your body is handling glucose.  You need to treat yourself as if you are diabetic.  What's the harm.  Go on an American Diabetic Association diet (ADA) which cuts way down on carbs and monitor your sugar.  Don't check it right after you eat.  Check it in the morning before you eat and before dinner at least 2 hours after you've had anything with calories, including drinks.

If she's only pre-diabetic she doesn't need to not go barefoot, etc, etc because there aren't any complications or restrictions yet. Other than avoiding getting T2. So she can eat a holiday/special occasion meal and slack off exercise one day and not get acutely ill. Of course one doesn't want to let it progress to T2.
