use of aspartame

by jim1205, Nov 17, 2008 11:26AM
I use aspartame for my sweetener. I understand that it is a "mind altering durg" meaning that it tricks your mind that it is sweet. Is that why when I drink say several glasses iced tea with 3 or 4 packs in it I get that sleepy feeling as I get when my surgar is up even thou if I check it it's not up as far as it seems? The aspartame is fooling me thinking my sugar is up.

Aspartame has been the subject of controversy regarding its safety around the circumstances of its approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Aspartame, like all artificial sweeteners, tricks your taste buds to satisfy your sweet craving. It's an artificial sweetener not a drug. One side effect of Aspartame listed is aggravated low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which would bring on lethargy as elevated glucose does. If you're getting drowsy/sleepy after consuming Aspartame your body is sending a warning message to stop consuming this product or risk further health damage.

A couple of reads for you on Aspartame:

McNeil Nutritions, USA, markets Splenda (sucralose). Splenda is the choice of many diabetics since it's made from sugar, has the taste of sugar, does not affect your glucose levels, and one uses a lot less than Aspartame to obtain the sweetness desired. Use only the No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated in a box, large package, or individual serving packets. Other Splenda products contain sugar.
