DIABETES - JUVENILE TYPE I COMMUNITY
My Doctor seems ignorant...

My Doctor seems ignorant...

Im 19 weeks pregnant and also a diabetic. Ive been diabetic for about 11 years and this is my first pregnancy. My a1c is a 6.7 which is very good so Ive been told. I have no diabetic complications what so ever and im 22 years old.  My new endocrine doctor insists that this a1c is too high and on one occassion I was admitted to the hospital. Here is the problem. I go to the doctor usually in the afternoon after I have had my mid meal and my sugar runs in the upper 200's. I tell the nurse that hey I just ate and I just took my insulin so it should go back down. Today I went to the doctor and the same thing happened and no one was listening. The doctor came in and all of a sudden wants to admit me in the hospital for a couple of days. I try to ask him of other options and he cuts me off and walks out of the exam room. I dont understand why. Last time when they did this I thought they were going to be monitoring my baby (at the time I was 14 weeks when I was admitted) but all they did was monitor my blood sugars every 2 hours and my blood sugar was back to normal about an hour after I was admitted into the hospital after which they STILL gave me an insulin drip which made my blood sugar crash, checked my sugar every 2 hours for 2 days, had me pee in cups, and only checked the baby' heart beat twice. They didnt find anything wrong (which I could have told them that from the jump start if they would have just listened) I thought since my sugar was high they would try and do an ultra sound and look at something more internal because of my high risk pregnancy. None of this was done. Now, by no means am I a doctor and Im not trying to say that my doctor isnt doing his job. But I feel that if a doctor is not going to work with me on communication and we come to a conclusion together because I know my own daily routines, why am I seeing you? 11 years of experience has taught me great control, and when I do see my endocrinologist, he basically asks me the same questions over and over every week. I feel like I dont really need one at this point that I should only be seeing an obstetrician right now. I can monitor myself if it comes to that. I thought this endo was going to be a benefit for my pregnancy but all I am is frustrated and unhappy. My last ultrasound they said the baby was fine. I can feel him moving around in my tummy. My obgyn says im great as well. The only thing they had to treat me for was a yeast infection in my 3rd month which is common among pregnancy. I mean, am I being too picky or emotional? Ive never been pregnant before so I defnitely DO understand the concern, but my thing is, none of the procedure for the concern is making sense to me? Why am I being held in the hospital for no reason and I have nurses doing to me what I can do at home? My doctor was like well we need to get your sugars down and monitor you because you are high risk pregnancy. In my mind its like doesnt it make sense to do some kind of monitoring on the baby since thats the bigger picture? Im trying to figure out if Im being paranoid at the fact I think the bigger picture is money issues. My heart is very clear on this subject and I want to find a new doctor in my area for diabetes. Deal with someone with common sense as to say, yeah her blood sugars are great, they just peak at meal time...duuhhhh am i right?

Hi,
I am 33 yr old type 1 diabetic. I was diagnosed when I was 18. I have two beautiful healthy boys , 7yr old and 17months.
I know this is all very frightening and emotionally draining but hang in there :) !
First, I know it seems as though the doctor is overreacting but it could be that he's just making sure your ok. A hem a1c of 6.7 is ok if your not pregnant. I know that normally my a1c is 5.5 - 5.7 but when I was pregnant it went to 6.0 and my ob didn't like that.He (my ob ) takkes tight blood control very seriously. My expierence is that the doctors want your levels even lower than what is considered exceptable for a diabetic. Also the reason he may have wanted to admit you to the hospital is to keep watch of your sugars and see under an controled enviornment what was going on with you.
Believe it or not some patients lie about thier glucose control because they don't want to be scolded by the Doc. I'm not saying you have done this, I just know a few friends who did this and my doctor said hes had patients lie and then deliver very unhealthy babies or worse.
As far as when you were in the hospital, were you hooked up to the belt monitors that continually monitor the baby? Usually thats the case when your admitted while pregnant.I would think it strange if not. Also, did your ob come to see you while in there or were they working together in your trearment?

Next I'm curious if you are being seen by a Perinatologist (not sure of the spelling) ? Being type 1 while pregnant is considered High Risk for the baby and you. During both my pregnancies I saw my obgyn and stopped my care with the endo to instead be monitored by the perinatologist. This included lots of blood work , keeping a blood sugar log and faxing it to them every week, testing my sugars 7x a day ( before and after meals & before bed), and Alot of songrams measuring the baby and looking at the heart.
You can go to all sorts of sites and look up risk factors that will show you that while you can totally have a healthy baby, you need to take extra care during pregnancy because there are lots of risks to the baby.
The first time I was pregnant I was 25 and was so excited about being pregnant, but then after seeing how serious all my  (WE LOVE our ob :) ) team of docs took my pregnancy it scared me. But I was reassured that as long as I did my best in keeping extra tight control, things would be ok.
Our first son weighed 9.7oz and had low blood sugar at birth. My sugars were pretty good while I was pregnant with him, but I was on different insulin then . Our second son was 7.2 oz and did not have low blood sugar. I know he was a more normal size and was not hypoglycemic because My insulin regimen was better and I had better control.
If you don't feel comfortable with your endo get another. You need to be able to express yourself and feel your being understood :). If you arent being seen by a perinatologist I strongly suggest you look ask you obgyn to reffer you to one.
I hope my expierence has helped, if at least to let you know your not alone and theres lots of moms who know what your going through. I pray all goes well and youand your sweet baby is happy and healthy :) !! Let us know what happens.
