2 year old thirsty, hungry, has bruises

by alisah, Sep 29, 2006 12:00AM
I am concerned about my 2 year old daughter--I called and spoke to the doctor's nurse yesterday about potty training and whether I should limit her fluid intake because she is constantly soaking her diapers.  She drinks 55-60 ounces of water or milk daily, which I found out is about double what she needs.  The doctor didn't seem concerned--just said she can slow down on drinking.

I also noticed 5 small bruises on her legs...she always has some...but I attributed that to being a 2 year old!  I have also noticed that her appetite has gone up in the last few weeks, but I assumed it was a growth spurt.

Am I thinking too hard about this?  She doesn't seem any more tired or irritable than normal.  Are these symptoms of diabetes or any other problem anyone knows about?

Hi, alisah!  I'm just a parent of a child with diabetes, not a medical professional, but I believe you have valid reasons to be concerned.  Your daughter's symptoms do indicate symptoms of diabetes.  The thirst and the extra peeing are two major symptoms, and they were the only two we saw when our daughter was diagnosed.  If I were you, I would call your doctor and get a urine test done today.  I pray we're wrong, but I'd rather know than just continue to worry about it.  Good luck.

I think RL has the right idea.  I have two children and if I have any concerns or questions I schedule an appointment with my pediatrician.  Parents know when something is wrong.
