4.5yr old with wierd symptoms

by jpell, Oct 16, 2006 12:00AM
I have a question about my 4.5yr old son. My son has always drank more than he eats and urinates more than other kids. We had urine tests done a few months ago and the first came back positive for elevated protein but not sugar. Subsequent tests and blood tests have come back fine. My wife and I are still nervous because of the drinking and urinating but also that he still naps. He is definately not a lazy kid, but still likes to nap almost every day. He is very small and doesn't gain much weight. What are your guys opinions on his symptoms. I know you aren't doctors but any help would be great.

Thanks.

I am not a physician, but the mom of a type 1 diabetic.  I also suggest that if you do not feel comfortable with what your doctor is doing, then get a second or third opinion.  You are the best advocate for your child.
As for napping my 11 year old daughter still like to take naps or rests as she puts it.  I look at it if the child need to rest they need to rest
Here are the symptoms of type one diabetes, if your child has any of these symptoms I would call your doctor and request that your child be testse4d for diabetes.
Knowing the warning signs for type 1 diabetes (juvenile diabetes) could save a child's life.
Warning signs of type 1 diabetes (these may occur suddenly):
„X Extreme thirst
„X Frequent urination
„X Sudden vision changes
„X Sugar in urine
„X Fruity, sweet, or wine-like odor on breath „X Increased appetite
„X Sudden weight loss
„X Drowsiness, lethargy
„X Heavy, labored breathing
„X Stupor, unconsciousness
If your child exhibits one or more of these symptoms, call a doctor immediately.
Education about the symptoms of type 1 diabetes is critical because type 1 can easily be mistaken for more common illnesses, such as the flu.
Please check back with us and let us know how things are going
