5 yr old symptoms

by sweetpea111, Jul 17, 2006 12:00AM
My daughter is 5 yrs old and is always thirsty.  She urinates at least once every two hours.  She wakes up in the middle of the night asking for water and saying she is thirsty.  She drinks like she is dehydrated.  She also gets up at night to go to the bathroom.  When I was pregnant with her I had gestational d. and at birth she was in the NICU for hypoglycemia.  She has a Dr. appt.  Aug.4th, but I am worried, should I take her in earlier or will it be safe to wait?  She is also always tired, and seems to get sick if she dosen't eat for a while.  She does have a few med. problems such as Neurofybromatosis and Craniosynastosis.  So she has been sick all her little life.  Her pediatrician moved away so I just found another doc. that don't know anything about what she has been through so this is a challenge.  Sorry for babbling just scared.  Thank you in advance for any of your help.

I am not a physician, but the mom of a child with type one diabetes.  I would suggest that you take your daughter to the pediatrican as soon as possiblea and ask to have her tested.  Below are some of the warning signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes.  A person does not to have all of them symptoms.   You have described several of the symptoms.  I would suggest that when you call the doctor¡¦s office you let them know they symptoms and that you wanted her to be tested.
Knowing the warning signs for type 1 diabetes could save a child's life.
Warning signs of type 1 diabetes (these may occur suddenly):
„X Extreme thirst
„X Frequent urination
„X Sudden vision changes
„X Sugar in urine
„X Fruity, sweet, or wine-like odor on breath „X Increased appetite
„X Sudden weight loss
„X Drowsiness, lethargy
„X Heavy, labored breathing
„X Stupor, unconsciousness
If your child exhibits one or more of these symptoms, call a doctor immediately

I hope this helps.  Please stop back and let us know how things are going.

This is just another question.  She has an appt. at the genetic clinic this week will they be able to help me? and if so when I take her do she need to fast for the 8hrs?

I would not wait to go to the genetic doctor. The type of dry that deals with diabetes is an endocrinologist.  They will be able to tell by both blood and urine tests.
