7 yr old type I having high sugars at night

by carlysmom, Sep 23, 2007 12:00AM
My 7 yr old was dx'd in May of this year and we are still having high nightime readings. Her Lantus has just been increased to 8 units on the 13th. Since then we have had 1 midnight reading over 400, 3 midnight readings over 300 and 4 midnight readings over 200. I cannot figure out a reason for these highs. I have watched her bedtime snacks to see if it's too much fat or something, but I can giver her the same snack on two different nights and get a good reading one night and she'll be over 300 the next time.  Nothing makes sense. Anybody have any advice for us newbies?

I am not a physician, but the mom of a type one diabetic.  I would suggest that you ask your endocrinologist about giving your child a shot of fast acting when they have there night time snack.  It might be helpful it is on a sliding scale. depending on what the  blood sugar is before the snack.

The other option is too about going on an insulin pump where you have better control of the insulin.

thanks that helps. I know it can take a while to get a pump so we have already started the process of talking about it and finding out when the next classes are.
