A cure

A cure

I heard that researchers have been honing in on the cause for Diabletes, some type of protein? Is this true?

Hello Maychild,
You've come to the right place to ask about research concerning diabetes ... it causes, potential cures, and causes/cures for complications, too.

I'd like to point you to the JDRF website (click the link here or visit www.jdrf.org).  From the main page, select the link (near the top of that page) called RESEARCH.  In that area, use the "search" function to see the report called,

"JDRF Position on the Strategic Research Plan of Diabetes Research Working Group --February 25, 1999"

This report outlines JDRFs vision for the many many research streams.  One of those streams is focused on prevention ... here is an excerpt from that report:

"The current scientific view is that type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic and environmental factors that, acting in concert, cause the body's immune system to attack and destroy its own insulin-producing beta cells. To better understand this process, the JDRF Task Force identified three areas of research focus: genetics, immune intervention, and beta cell dysfunction. " so even in 1999 they had honed in on the several causes for diabetes, tho' not yet the exact mechanism of those causes or their interactions.

For more current reports see the report (in the same research area) called Prevention of Diabetes & Its Recurrence.  This report contains dozens of references to articles in the magazine _Diabetes Countdown_ (a JDRF publication) both before & after that 1999 report above.

The title of your msg suggests you might also be interested in the prognosis for a CURE and in that research area, you'll be able to read about some of the studies focused in that area.  As an autoimmune disease, type 1 diabetes remains challenging to cure.  We ARE going to get a cure, I'm certain of that.

I hope you find these references helpful and perhaps you'll find additional articles of interest on that JDRF site, too.
