At what sugar level do you pass out?

by fgunning, Jan 28, 2008 12:00AM
I was just wondering at what point most people pass out from hypoglycemia.  I am a 17 year old diabetic who has had diabetes for two and a half years and have had good control (My A1Cs have been a 6.0, 6.0, 5.7, and 5.5)  I have started playing sports now that spring is beginning and my sugar has been lower than I would like it, and recently I was walking in Seattle after about 3 hours of playing sports and I checked my sugar and I was 18.  I had always been told I would be unconscious by this point, but when I took my machine home and calibrated it, the machine was functioning correctly.
So at what point do you really pass out?

I am not a physi can but the mom  of a type one diabetic.  I can tell you that each and every person is  different.  I know kids that have had seziesr s from being too low at 60 or  passing out , while others can go as low as 20.  I would suggest that you talk to your endoccronogist and explain to him/ her what sport aand activites you are doing.  if you are on a pump - you can give your seld a temperary basal at those time, or on shots have extra carbs.  the safest thing is to call your docotor and siscuss these issues, and to always have a Glucagon handy along with snacks.

In addition?
Have you " Calibrated" your meter per your Blood Lab test? ( ie: bring meter with , test at same time they draw..) Besides the A1c and other things, it should also show what your reading was at the time of the draw.. That one is more accurate..
remember, meters can be allowed by the FDA to be upto 20% off..
Eventhough? Younger T1's can handle lower Levels..an it is best to be testing Every Hour while doing any physical activity.. I found Gum drops to help me alot, they don't melt, etc.. I keep sveral in my pocket all the time..never leave home without them..
