Blood in Sure-T

by ark1kam, Jul 01, 2007 12:00AM
My 8 year old daughter has been on the Minimed pump for about 3 months. We have had a couple of episodes where blood will back up into the tubing--after she has had it on for a while. We change out every 3 days and have had no problems with highs or lows--but we know to change the infusion set to a different site every time we see blood in the tubing. We want to know why this happens? We can see if you hit a vessel when the needle is inserted--but somtimes it is a day or two before the bloold backs up into the tupbing. We want to know why this happens and what we can do to possibly prevent it.

I am not a physician but the mom of a type one diabetic on a pump.  My daughter occasisionally gets blood in the tubing when she removes her site.  I have asked my doctor and our pump representative,  they have told us that if her numbers are ok it is nothing to worry about.

I would suggest that if it continues to happen to call Minimed and see if the 24 hour help line can give you some suggestions, or call your pump rep

Is it happening when you are connected or disconnected?  If your son is disconnected for a while he might need to re prime.    Call minimed they will be able to give you  guidance.

I am not a doctor but this is just a guess, I also use the minimed pump and have for the past 4 years. I use the sure-t sets and have only once had blood back up into the tubing. If your daughter is 8 years old she probably doesnt get a very large basal rate per hour. I would guess that there is not enough insulin passing through the tube for her (being so young) and that is why the blood backs up into it. There is just not enough coming out of the tube to keep the blood from going into it. I would just call your doctor and ask her.
Hope you figure it out!
