CAN CONSTAPATIN BE A SYMPTOM OF DIABETES

by acm, Aug 25, 2003 12:00AM
DOSE ANYONE KNOW IF CONSTAPATION CAN BE A SIGN OF DIABETES. MY SON HAS A FEW OF THE SIGNS OF DIABETES SUCH AS ALACK OF ENERGY IRRATABLEITY BEING SLOW TO HEAL A LOSE OF WEIGHT (ABOUT 1.5 KILO IN THE LAST 8 WEEKS) AND A SLIGHT INCREASE IN HIS DRINKING AND HAS STARTED TO WAKE A FEW TIMES A WEEK TO GO TO THE TOILET AT NIGHT A XRAY TAKEN TODAY SHOWED A MILD CASE OF CONSTAPTION. WHILE THE DR FEELS THE CONSTAPATION CAN EXPLAIN MOST OF THE SYMTOMS  IT DOSNT EXPLAIN THE WEIGHT LOSE AND THE LEVEL OF CONSTAPATION DONT QUITE MATCH THE DEGREE OF THE SYMTOMS AND HAS ORDERED A TEST FOR DIABETES AMONG OTHER THINGS

I  am the mother of a child with diabetes  not a medical person.  I have done a lot of research and have not seen anything that relates constipation to diabetes. I would ask your doctor to test your child for diabetes.  I have heard of the problem of constipation  causing  lack of energy and irratavlilty.  My daughter has that problem which she deveolped recently.  We have seen specialtist and we were told that it was not diabetes related. Our daughter was put on a slightly higher fiber diet and it has regulated the problem.

Hope everthing will be ok.

I am also the mother of a child with diabetes and agree with JDRF team wak.  My son had weightloss, thirst, etc.  It is great that you are having him checked for diabetes.  It is better to know sooner than later.  If he doe's have diabetes, please feel free to contact us again.  I have found that the support of JDRF has been a personal lifeline for me. Best of luck.
