DIABETES - JUVENILE TYPE I COMMUNITY
Could it be diabetes?

Could it be diabetes?

My 3 y.o. had an incident at pre-school the other day where he became lethargic and sweating quite suddenly.  He looked pink and blotchy for a few moments in the car and when I got him home in about 15 mins. I gave him a granola bar and OJ (figuring if the flu it would either come back up or stay down!)   He had eaten healthy cereal, toast, banana, OJ  for b-fast at 8AM and it was 10AM when the school called (so only 2 hr. window).    The snack and a 1/2 hour of rest on the couch and he was back to normal.    Now he does seem to be drinking/ eating/ urinating more now 2 days after the pre-school incident (the 1st and only of this kind ever).   He is always more a high energy kid than lethargic, so no problems there and I don't notice any other of the usual symptoms.   Would you suggest an Accutest at the pediatrician's office?   A friend suggested it....or am I being paranoid?

Also, he has had 2 bed wetting instances this week (something we've not had in probably 6 months or more as he was a very early potty trainer).   So this adds to our concerns of diabetes?

I would definitely go to see a doctor. If it is type 1 diabetes, you would do exactly the wrong thing by giving him carbs (such as cereal, juice, toast etc.) right now and diabetes is so simple to check and you should not sit at home and worry that that's what it could be. I hope it's not what you think and I hope he will be fine and it was maybe just a minor cold/flu, but I'd want to be on the safe side. IF diabetes is the diagnosis, maybe look at the Diabetes Association Website as a resource as well. http://community.diabetes.org/n/forumIndex.aspx?webtag=adaindex

Good luck, Nicki
