Diabetic Fibrous Breast Disease

by MJKJJJ, Nov 29, 2006 12:00AM
I am a type 1 diabetic and have been diagnosed with Diabetic Fibrous Breast Disease, bilaterally.  The first doctor I saw recommended a mastectomy with reconstruction which was something I was not willing to undergo.  The doctor I recently saw for a second opinion arranged for me to have an MRI which I have just had performed.  It was her further recommendation that I should have an actual core biopsy performed on each breast to rule out cancer (I had a needle aspiration on each side which showed benign cells, but the doctor feels this is not 100% conclusive even though she is not suspicious that the masses are truly cancerous).

My question is this - is it feasible to have the entire mass removed in each breast and then have implants put in (in one surgery)?  If I am going to have a biopsy, I feel I would like the entire mass to be removed from each side; however, in doing so I think an implant would become necessary from an aesthetic standpoint.  Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks to LRF from the JDRF team for good ideas.

I don't know if I am talking about the same thing so forgive me if I am not on the same page, but my mom had fibrocystic disease...nothing to do with diabetes. She would have masses.  They tried to treat it but wound up removing everything and having implants put in.

I'm sorry, I had just read a long response from another JDRF team member, which is why I thanked her, but it suddenly vanished from the site.

I am afraid that I know nothing about Diabetic Fibrous Breast Disease, and your question is very specific, for people who have experience with this. Can any Forum members out there help out?
