Diabeties

I have 8 years old son with type 1 diabetes. He recently did a lab tests. His TSH result is 5.02 mcIU/mL and His A1c 8.7%. His doctor suggested to put him on thyroxin (Synthroid) 50 MCG.I do not if it is necessary to start at this age or is he really need that.

Hi,

it is very important for children to have their thyroid levels optimised (for growth and development).  I would also like to see that he is tested for FT3 and FT4, which are the actual thyroid hormone levels.  If these are in the low end of the range or below range he should definitely be on medication.

Optimal TSH is generally in the range of 1 - 2 AND FT3 and FT4 should be at least middle of the reference range (or in the upper 1/2).

His blood sugars are running on the high side as well and managing thyroid will help in managing his blood sugars.
