Does diabetes cause tears to taste sweet?

by nicfanz, Jun 21, 2007 12:00AM
I have a niece with diabetes and reswearching online, I learned that high glucose levels cause sorbitol to be accumulated in the eyes which result in a white lens called cataract. Does the existence of sorbitol in the eye cause tears to taste sweet? I read that someone who had cataract surgery due to diabetes had her eye eaten by ants.

Hello!  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes, but I may have to see a medical professional, because the thought of getting your eye eaten by ants is rather gross.  Ugh.

I have never heard of such a thing as sorbitol causing tears to taste sweet.  The only reference I can find to the story you mention is a single story from India about a hospital which was negligent in the care of a woman who was comatose after surgery.  I think it's safe to say that is the (rare) exception rather than the rule.
