Equal Sugar Substitute

by cindymhi, Aug 08, 2003 12:00AM
Hi,

Can people with diabetes use Equal or other sugar substitute as much as they like? Some things I have read say "yes" others say "no" and I'm confused!

Sugar substitutes or non-caloric drinks will not affect your blood sugar, but I would consume in moderation.  You may want to speak to a registered dietitian or contact the American Dietetic Association.  Foods containing sugar alcohols have given me an upset stomach when I have eaten too much.

Sugar substitute's consumed in large doses do have some carbohydrates (CHO). I just looked at our box of Sweet n Low and it said that one packet has less than one gram of sugar, sugar alcohols, and CHO. So if you had lets say 20 packets then it would add up.

But I have never had a problem with sugar substitutes. i would recommend Splenda cause it is the least artificial of them all and you can measure it just like sugar when you cook.
