Can you get diabetes from eating loads of sugary foods?

Hello,

I wish I knew the answer, and I have wondered the same thing.  My son who is almost 27, was diagnosed just last year with type 1!  He did consume too much sugar, mostly in liquid form, but other things as well.  Before he was diagnosed, he lost 50 lbs, and drank lemonade constantly.  Alway hungry, and THIRSTY. He had for a long time taken in way more sugar than a normal diet would allow.  He has never been overweight.  He exercises, and is active in sports.  Finally we went to the Dr, and his BS was 800+.  Last night was the first time I've seen him with too low BS.  It was a little scary.  He drank part of a coke and he was OK.  I don't know if I helped, but I do wonder the same thing.   Sandi

It's possible to get Type Two that way, but no way can you get Type One from eating sugary foods. Type One is where the pancreas randomly stops producing insulin, and doctors and researchers haven't discovered why yet. What happens with people who develop Type One is that when they eat food, any type of food, the sugar, instead of going into your cells, stays in your bloodstream, because there is no insulin to open up the cell so that the sugar can be absorbed and turned into energy. When it stays in the bloodstream, then your blood sugar levels go high, and you get really thirsty, peeing a lot, moody, fatigue, and all that. Type One diabetes then have to take insulin shots.
For Type Two, you still are producing some insulin, but there's problems with your body's insulin receptors, really just meaning that the cells aren't absorbing the sugar of the food you're eating, which results in it staying in your bloodstream and your blood going high. Best thing for Type two is trying to lead a healthier lifestyle.
