How low is too low?

Is a blood sugar level of 56 low enough to cause unresponsiveness in a 2 year old?

Hello.  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes.  The answer to your question is complicated.  Not a lot is known about the conditions which can cause unresponsiveness, other than low blood sugars.  With the advent of continuous glucose monitors, we have learned more.  Only 3 documented cases are known where someone had that kind of severe low while on the CGMS.  Of those 3, one person was low for 2 hours, one was low for 3 hours, and the other was low for 5.  It is now thought that seizures and unresponsiveness come about with extended lows, for at least a couple hours.  Scores below 60 for an extended perioud of time can certainly cause unresponsiveness.
