Husband Type I, chances of children being diabetics???

by krushing, Jul 31, 2006 12:00AM
My husband and I are starting to begin the preparation of starting a family.  He is a Type I diabetic.  He was diagnosed at the age of 8 and he is now 29.  My concern was whether or not this would be something that would be passed on to our children?  I've spoken to my doctor and she gave me the name of a geneticist (sp?), but our appointment was scheduled so far away, due to her schedule.

I am not a physician, but the mom of a type one diabetic. I have read research that states that the risk factor for an off spring is higher if a parent has diabetes, but I have never seen any numbers associated with how high the risk.  I see about getting genetic testing and talking you your doctor about it.  Unfortunately there is no way to say for sure that the child will or will not develop diabetes.
