Hypoclycemia and alcohol symptom

by lostinspace, Nov 11, 2005 12:00AM
About 4 weeks ago, I left work at 1:00am and at 2:30am was found slumped over in my car on a road that was in the wrong direction of home.  I had 1/2 of a drink that night along with clam chowder and several pieces of bread; I had been using cleaning solvents and doing some strenuous work.  Police were called and I apparently was arrested on a DUI.  I remember nothing after driving out of the parking lot of my place of employment until I awoke at 10:00am.  I have a very clear memory prior to that.  I have been working two jobs and have been rarely eating for the past 7 months. My son was concerned with my continual fatigue, depression, failure to eat, anixity, nervousness etc and offered to pay for me to see the doctor.  As diabetis runs in my family, the doctor felt I might be diabetic.  After checking my blood sugar twice at 1:00 in the afternoon, I registered a 60.  He told me I was hypoglycemic.  Is it possible to register high levels of alcohol in ones system and appear highly intoxicated with hypoglycemia given the above circumstances?  And would hypoglycemia account for a 9 hour loss of memory and cause me to go in the opposite direction of home?

The alcohol in your system wouldn't show much of an increase with only one drink but the alcohol would add to the hypoglycemia. i know because 8 years ago where i use the local VA hospital, after a dental cleaning appointment, all i remember is leaving the dental office and telling the hygenist a joke. After that i don't remember nything and i did check my blood sugar in my car before leaving and it was 34 , very low, and it didn't register to me to eat something, and the only way i know this is when i was brought to the hospital after my car accident the doctor brought my meter out to my wife and showed her.
i spent two months in the hospital and after the third operation trying to put my right leg back together i got an infection and they had to amputate the leg. Then i spent three months in a rehab hospital learning how to walk with a walker.
But a low blood sugar can make you act as if you are intoxicated which is why it is best to avoid them if you are driving. So i sometimes run my blood sugars a little high to prevent lows as getting too many lows too frequently can bring on unawareness of lows. You should work out a plan with your doctor for this. good luck, bret
