Hypoglycemia and LIS

by sorig, Nov 17, 2005 12:00AM
My 79 year old mother recently died. She was a diabetic and took insulin injections.
She was hospitalized for a hip replacement and was recovering satisfactorily from a msra infection.
She was apparently given insulin for high blood sugar and it dropped to 45.  She became unresponsive and was having focal point seizures which were addressed. She remained unresponsive , showed a normal eeg, with a preliminary diagnosis of locked in syndrome.  Is it possible that her hypoglycemic condition could have caused her stroke to the brainstem and the LIS?

I am so very sorry about the loss of your mother.  I wish I could help you understand what may have caused her stroke, but I am not a doctor and actually don't even understand some of what you describe happened.  I would encourage you to go back to the physician in charge and ask for an appointment just to help you understand what happened. Sometimes, doctors are sensitive about talking to patients who have lost loved ones because of liability issues, but most understand that family members just want to know what happened.  If you approach him or her fom that perspective, he or she may willing to set your mind at ease.  The bottom line is that sometimes bad things happen that are in nobody's control and there is no explanation.  Again, I am sorry about your loss and I hope that you and your family find some peace and blessing in the memories of your mother.
