In need of answers

by RP-kid, Sep 17, 2006 12:00AM
My uncle was being treated at home for diabetes and ended up getting bed sores. Ended up getting holes in his legs that ended up   bringing ganggreen and after some b-12 in both his knees daily he seemed to be getting better. Now he his getting bruises that turn into blood blisters that when they pop prove to be one inch holes in his legs anyone know what this could be and how it could or should be treated?! How it can be treated? and how these sores are starting?

Thanks
Kid

Hello, RP-kid,
We are volunteers here and we are not medical professionals.  In addition to reading the info and references we can provide here, please make sure your uncle and/or his caregivers are asking these questions to his endocrinologist and other members of his medical team.

As patients we are taught that the better our control of this disease, the less likely we are to suffer complications from high blood sugar.  High blood sugar works relentlessly to damage our organs and blood vessels.  While we don't often think about in these terms, our skin is an body organ and can suffer damage as well.

Here is a good website with information about all sorts of diabetes-related possible skin disorders. I warn you that some of the pictures are quite disturbing to look at, but they depict real conditions in real folks with diabetes.
http://www.telemedicine.org/dm/dmupdate.htm

Read carefully the information on Necrobiosis Lipoidica -- On that website, it's listed in the category of "OTHER SKIN MARKERS"  Good luck to your uncle; he's fortunate that you're so interested and caring.
