Insulin Errors at school

by cdmcbride, Feb 20, 2006 12:00AM
My (7 year old) daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 last October.  The school has an aide in the health room which is very good emotionally to my child; however, there are continuous errors in the insulin injections.  I have attempted to simplify the math, but the factors are different on gym days v. non gym days - etc.  I am finding that the basic math is where most of the errors happen.  I have sent a calculator.....  I need some suggestions.  I have looked into the pump; however, the doctors want her to be at least 9 yrs old before pumping.

I am not a physician but the mom of type one diabetic that has been on a pump since she was 7 1/2, after being a diabetic for 2 years.
We also had a problem in school; we have an endocrinologist that believes in the pump.  We had our nurse trained at the time by the pump rep on how to use the pump and how to do everything so that everyone was comfortable.  I know most pump companies; (WE use Minimed) will do this.  It was the best move we made.

I do know that there are kids around here as young as 2 on the pump.  I would suggest have a talk with your doctor and insist on the pump, If he still refuses, see if there is another endocrologist in the area that has the same feelings that you do.  I have friends that have switched endocrinologist because they did not treat the child as a child first and a diabetic second,or had the same feelings on how to treat the child as the parent.

As for the math in school, I would ask to speak to the aide’s supervisor as she is putting your daughter health in serious danger. (They could have a serious liability issue if she gives the wrong dosage) I would tell them that they need to get someone else in there that can do math, because if they give her too much, she could have serious problems and you will hold them LEGALLY responsible.   This is why the pumps are so good now as they do the entire math and calculate how much insulin is active.

The only other suggestion is that the aide calls you every time and you check her math, but that is not putting the responsibility where it belongs IN THE SCHOOL   I would  do this till you get things straightened out with the nurses supervisor.  Remember YOU are the advocate for your child you need to speak up and fight for your rights all the time. The school is legally responsible for you child under the Americans with disabilities act.

Put it in your 504 that the person in charge of your daughter MUST be able to correctly figure out the dosages and take care of your child properly. SEE if the nurse educator can help train the aid.

I hope this helps. Please let me know how things turn out.
