Insulin Pump and Tanning

by UCOCowgirl, Jul 13, 2004 12:00AM
I was diagnosed with type 1 about 3 years ago. I have been also been tanning daily for almost 2 years now. I recently found out that i am being approved for an insulin pump. I was wondering if any ladies have this problem and how they get around tanning lines from the infusion sets. Thanks Megan

UCOcowgirl,
What an interesting question!

I'm a pumper but don't do tanning salons. My stepdaughter is not a diabetic but she does do tanning salons. My comments are an attempt to put our experiences together in some reasonable way.

One of the things she & her buddies often do is to wear a little sticker (flower, bird, heart) and to allow their skin to tan around that shape. When their tanning is done, they have that shape on their skin. You might consider doing something similar and perhaps -- since you must rotate your infusion sites -- tan with several of those stickers applied.

One of my infusion sites is my butt area ... and, on me, that's covered by a swimsuit. If that's true for you, too, then you could choose to use sites like that when you're tanning.

You probably know this, but do be careful to not "cook" your insulin while tanning or out in the hot sun. Good luck!
