Is there something wrong with me, what should I get checked

by clmbngymrat, Jun 19, 2007 12:00AM
Not sure where my question should go (under which topic) for i am not sure what is wrong with me...  I have a few things and am not sure if they are related.  I have gotten light headed, "spacey", and my stomach has gotten very queezy.  If I eat something it seems to help but sometimes it is not instintanious... it seems to take a bit for things to "kick-in".  This doesn't happen everyday as bad but everyday, I get very cold when i eat.  I mean goose bumps and uncontrollable shivers cold!  Is this related?  One more thing my hands and feet also always seem cold... I do have very low blood pressure but my dizziness is not just when i stand it is all the time (when i have it) and when i am having this icky feeling i have checked my blood pressure and it was 116 over something like 60 (can't remember the bottom number)  So any ideas?  Should I have my sugar levels checked?  Or is there something else?  I hate feeling spacey, tired and I can't seem to concentrate!  This seemed to be a bit better if i remember to take a vitamin every day (thought it may be low iron levels).  Anyone have any ideas?

Your symptoms sound like classic symptoms of hypoglycemia... I would suggest that you get your doctor to do a glucose tolerance test. But don't be surprised if the test results come back normal, for sometimes people don't have the hypo symptoms when they are being tested even though they clearly have the symptoms at other random times. The body just isn't that predictable. Your cold feelings, shivers, spacey feeling, dizziness, etc. are typical symptoms, though.  And yes, it does take a while for the foods to kick in. They need to digest before the carbs are available to the brain. A half cup of juice may help you feel better quicker when this happens. But don't make assumptions -- please do get your doctor to test you. Vitamins should not affect the situation if it is hypoglcyemia.

Thank you, for your response, I will go in and get checked.  However i know I have had blood test done before and they have come back normal.  As a matter of fact I just had an out paitent procedure done and i am pretty sure they would have tested for sugar levels, for I had some pre-op blood work done.  I am 37, 5' 4", 135LBS.  active and in "fairly" good shape.  Could this be caused from something more serious?   Or is this common to have this come on for no other reasons?

So what tests should I make sure get done?

I was thinking of purchasing a glucose tester and monitoring it thoughout the day (but they are not cheep).  Is this something i should do?

hi, i just bought a meter. i ended up in the ER the first time i had a big attack (shaking, dizziness, hard to move, anxiety). By the time i saw the doc i was at a normal blood sugar, if i remember 135.
so, basically if you are relatively healthy i think your body fixes your blood sugar levels naturally (not an enjoyable experience). so, if you really want to get to the bottom of it fast, i would suggest a glucometer. i bought one and ended up feeling much better knowing that something terribly wrong wasn't the cause.

ps. in the midst of an episode your blood sugar will read normal, yet you aren't feeling normal at all. this is because of your body dumping reserves into your system.

so what good would the meter be?  does it just give piece of mind?  Have you gotten an abnormal reading at different times?  Does this help to monitor and determin when you eat or get out the sugar?  I would like to know before i feel like **** that I need to do something, for sometimes it takes a long time to feel better and function normally again!  I need to know what to do and when things are getting bad before hand so that I am not putting myself or others in danger...so when i go out on the road with my roadbike or hang off a cliff while rock climbing i know i will not get dizzy and make a mistake...
