Keto-acidocis

Hi, I'm a medical student and was just wondering if it was okay to use this forum to ask qusestions for study purposes?

For example, with regard to ketone bodies, are they continously produced at low levels by the body due to oversaturation of glycolytic pathways with acetyl CoA, or are they only produced after guconeogensis has run its course and Beta-oxidation has started and thus the acetyl CoA is turned into ketone bodies as they can't be taken up into the glycolytic pathway?

Thanks

Thank you for your interest in our forum, however I don't believe it is the proper forum for you.  Our desire is to use this forum to communicate with those families dealing/living with type 1 diabetes.  There are hundreds of web sites you can search to find answers to your
questions.  I did however consult with one of our medical specialists and he gave me the following site for you to check out.  Hope this helps:

I'm not certain if med student Q&A is the best use of this particular diabetes resource, but as a person with Type 1 DM, I did find your question interesting.

I used these 2 other sources to get a lay-person's feel for the answer.  Perhaps there's a morsal or two in these sites for you, too.

(1) http://www.gpnotebook.co.uk/simplepage.cfm?ID=-140902342
(specifically focuses on Ketone Body Formation)

and this very informative site -- which I *thought* was discussing ketones in humans, only to discover near the end that it's a veterinary site!

Good luck in your studies.  As a prof myself, I'd also suggest you fire off your question to your prof, teaching assistant, or study group members.
