Milk protein and Type 1 increased risk?

Milk protein and Type 1 increased risk?

Hi,

My dear husband is 42 YO, and has been a Type 1 diabetic since he was 11. We are now the parents of 3 1/2 YO boy and girl twins. It was recently brought to my attention some research that has shown an increased risk of "inheritance" of Type 1 in children with a close relative/genetic link with someone with the condition who have been drinking cow's milk (or cow's milk based formula) since early infancy. The protein in the milk is suspected to create an autoimmune response that triggers the destruction of the pancreas cells.

I'm truly mortified by this. My children were born healthy but prematurely, and the FIRST thing they received at the NICU was Similac's Neosure formula (cow based). No one even considered their father's condition or the research, no one mentioned a thing, no advice, etc. Even though I breast fed my twins for 3 months I always had to supplement with formula. At 3 months we switched to GoodStart, but by 1 year and 2 months my children were drinking regular cow's milk.

I'm worried for my children. I hate to think that somehow we have increased the probability of them having their father's disease. Any thoughts? Thanks, J
