Mixing Lantus

Mixing Lantus

By mistake, I mixed 5 1/2 units of Lantus with 1 unit of Humalog, this morning when I went to give my daughter her morning insulin.  What will be the reaction?

Hello Esq,
I'm not a physician or a pharmacist, but I'm a long-time diabetic.

I have read that mixing Lantus with any other insulins can result in unpredictable results in both the Lantus and ... your daughter's case ... Humalog.  Unpredictable can mean that the Humalog will not peak as expected (may be delayed) and the Lantus may also have a diluted effect.

Watch your daughter carefully for adverse effects.  All should be fine by the time tomorrow rolls around.  If Lantus has been affected, then she may run higher than normal.  As you know, it's MUCH better to run a little higher than to risk a severe low.

We all have made dosing mistakes, so please know you're in very good company here.  I've read that some folks will put a rubber band around their vial of Lantus and wrap it around enuf times that they can slip their Lantus syringe into it.  Some folks use a pen for their "other" insulin and syringe for Lantus.  If your situation allows it, you might consider getting a Humalog pen.

When tomorrow comes, it would be helpful to the rest of us reading if you would post what *did* happen today.  We can all learn from your experience.

All the best.
