My 4 yr old daughter has ketones from 15-80 and sugar 250-500 in urine...

by MaryC79, Oct 31, 2007 12:00AM
Hi!  I posted the first part of my daughters story about 2 weeks ago, but I wanted to know if anyone has EVER heard of anything like my daughters.  I would really appreciate ANY feedback and advice.  So here is the story.
I still have NO answers for my little girl, they are telling me there is no possible way that she could be diabetic, her keytones come and go and she really hasn't had anymore sugars in her urine. (Her keytones have ranged  from 15-80 and sugar 250-500 in urine)(no sugar above normal levels in her blood)
All she does is sleep, she doesn't want to play at all with anyone, She has zero energy, she quit eating, she's throwing up once a week, she has fevers, unexplained rashes that come and go mysteriously, she tells me her head hurts and that her arms and legs do too.  I am sent in circles by Dr.'s and I end up crying myself to sleep wondering if my child is even going to wake up in the morning.  Has anyone ever heard of such a crazy thing????
I am so worried, and I am so sick of the Dr.'s sending me to Urgent care sending me back to my Dr sending me to the ER sending me to my dr. sending me to urgent care.  It seems like ALL the Dr.'s are stummped and all they know to do is send me to a different one.
Any comments or advice will help so PLEASE help me.  Thank you Mary

Hello, Mary.  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes.  Based upon your description, I don't believe that your daughter has diabetes.  But there is clearly something wrong.  Ketones can show up in a non-diabetic because of illnesses, and the more serious the illness the higher the ketones.  That stress on the body can also cause blood sugars to go up.  It happens all the time in otherwise healthy people who are undergoing some kind of physical stress with their bodies, such as major surgery.  Since it doesn't sound like she's had surgery, then the question is whether or not her body is undergoing some other type of major illness.  Have you ever had her checked for cancer?  I have no reason to suspect that, other than it is a serious and major illness that can cause that kind of stress on a body.  That would be my next avenue to explore.  Good luck.

Thank you for your response.  They tested her today for cancer and that was negative.  They are planning on running a bunch more test on Monday.  It looks like she doesn't have diabetes either.

Wow, it's good to know those two diagnoses have been ruled out.

Hi.  My daughter has Lupus SLE and also Hashimoto's and she had the fever, rashes and vomitting, aching arms and legs, fatigue etc etc.  I'm not sure about keytones, but my daughter was checked for ANA re the SLE and thyroid antibodies for the Hashimoto's.  May be worth checking??

Thank you, She is going back in tomorrow for more testing.  We got some labs back today, they showed high levels of protein and low levels of bilirubin. But her liver enzymes came back normal.  This is so weird,I wish we could get some answers.
Did your child have normal white blood cell counts?

She  has diabetes a severe pancreatic infection or severe kidney disease. Have her  endocrine glands scanned for tumors and make sure she is urinating properly. This should be an easy diagnoses for a trained er physician.
