Need some help please

Hello, I recently went to my Dr and he mentioned that my blood glcuse levels were getting high ... last yr they were 191 and this yr they have reached 248 ... they are actually 5 MMOL and 6,5 MMOL (Canadian measures)  In any case, I am 39 no history of heart disease, ok shape and probably 8-10 lbs over weight and probably eat too much sugar based foods and carbs. My mother recently developed diabities at age 58 (takes insulin shots) and dad 65 on pills but not yet taking insulin.  The Dr said I could prevent it but need to loose weight and watch the carbs and diet. Also start excercising etc ... What other things could I do so that I do not end up a diabetic ?

Many thanks-

abeybaby,
I'm not a physician, but I've had Type 1 diabetes for many years.  Whether your tests were a "fasting glucose test" or an "oral glucose tolerance test" a person with your results should see a diabetes specialist right away.  Have a look at the website of the the American Diabetes Association, particularly this page which covers "How to Tell if you have Pre-Diabetes" (http://www.diabetes.org/pre-diabetes/pre-diabetes-symptoms.jsp)

The American Diabetes Association has a very informative website as does the Canadian Diabetes Association.  The main ADA website is http://www.diabetes.org  The main CDA website is http://www.diabetes.ca

Losing weight, exercising, adjusting your diet, reading reading reading about how to live well even with diabetes, AND a visit with an endocrinologist or diabetologist are my suggestions for you.

Since you're in Canada, I'd recommend that you contact a local chapter of Canadian Diabetes Association and ask them for a list of doctors who specialize in the treatment of diabetes.  Your doctor has told you good things to do; a diabetic specialist would evaluate your whole medical situation and determine if medication is necessary now.

Taking meds is far better than NOT taking meds if we need them.  Not taking them simply invites the devastating complications to come quickly.  Taking meds as directed by our docs can help prevent complications and most diabetics who treat their disease correctly FEEL a whole lot better, more energetic and yes ... even happier.

I wish you well and hope that you, your mom & dad will help each other learn how to take good care of yourselves and each other, and will help each other gather strength to make the lifestyle changes that are so beneficial.
