New Lantus user - itchiness and rash-like reaction

I am in my second month of using Lantus with Humalog.  At about week 2 or 3 I began experiencing sporadic rash in front of shins.  Later, the itching and raised bumps appeared behing the knee at top of calves.  Now I think it is appearing at left elbow.  General feelings of itchiness accompany the outbreaks without apparent rash.  I am attributing this to the new medication - Lantus - as all else remains basically stable in my life routine.  I have tried correlating it with high doses of H due to high carb intake and then a possible mixing of the H with the Lantus.  Neither theory panned out.  Does anyone have any similar experiences?  I was warned by nurse that I might have reactions to the Lantus, but have not been able to get back to the clinic to find out if this is a normal reaction that will go away.  So far, it does wax and wane so my motivation is confused.  Will this go away after awhile?

Dear tumtum,
i am not a doctor but a person who  has ben diabetic 32 years. i am now on an insulin pump and only use Novolog, a rapid acting insulin for both my  background and bolus insulin needs. i would recommend you call the clinic as that very well could be a reaction to the Lantus and they may put you on a different background type insulin. The body needs two forms of insulin schedules, a bolus to cover meals and abackground or basal schedule to cover the glocose the liver releases all day. But i would also when you call the clinic let them know of your concerns.
take care, bret

I just started taking lantus early this month, my dr. just increased my does to 20 last night, immediately after I experienced small red marks and itching on the front of my shins and a big welt on the back of my calf. I am going to see physicians assistant tomorrow, to find out what is going on/

Take care. L
