Newly diagnosed

by georgiusv, Jan 03, 2007 12:00AM
I have just been diagnosed with type 2. My fasting glucose level is between 7.2 and 7.9. I have been testing over the last 2 weeks and my sugar level never falls below 6.5.

I am a male, 38, 6'1", 190lbs.

I have tested several times today and my GL has not fallen below 8.1 all day....here is my food intake for the day.

9am: Breakfast: whole grain bagel + thin slice of cheddar + large coffee (half sugar and milk)

1:30pm Lunch: 6" "Subway" turkey sub - with veggies and no sauces.

7:00 pm Dinner: 10 oz skinless chicken breast - baked in a fresh tomato + herbs puree. No carbs.

I also had a green tea and 2 diet pepsi during the course of the day.

I have had days where I have eaten twice as much and my level have been 6.5 - 7.5 each time I tested.

Should I be on medication?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hi Georgiusv,
We aren't doctors, and this is really a forum for type-1 diabetes, so we cannot say whether or not you should be on medication. You really need to ask your doctor that. But I will say that I know a lot of type-2 diabetics (including my husband and almost all of his family), and they definitely need medication to keep it controlled. In my husband's case, the oral medication (not insulin) has really helped keep his numbers in control, regardless of his diet.

Please ask your doctor (preferably an endocrinologist) for a recommendation. Your diet is commendable-- I'm a 5'7 woman, and I'd have trouble eating that little!

Good luck.
