Normal blood levels and seizures

by mango_monkey, Jan 08, 2008 12:00AM
Hey,
I have a question for anyone here. My sister is type 1, and recently had a seizure the morning after a night out. Her blood sugar was 6 or so, so not high, but OK.
She has no other seperate conditions that could have caused it.
She woke up, and was alert for a good hour, then it happened.
Any ideas?

Seizures usually happen to type 1 diabetics whose blood sugar levels have been dropping for a long period of time. It happens because the brain's primary fuel is glucose, and if a person's blood glucose levels drop too low, the brain cannot properly communicate with muscles. Often, terrible muscle cramps or seizures then result until the person either is able to take in some carbohydrates or the person's own liver finally dumps some emergency stored sugars into their system to help bring up the glucose levels. You did not say whether your sister had been drinking alcohol, but alcohol inhibits the liver's ability to release stored emergency sugars, and hypoglycemia is a real danger if a person drinks a lot of alcohol.
