Not gaining weight with Type 1 diabetes

by girish08, Apr 11, 2008 02:14AM
Hello Doctor,

I have type one diabetes diagnosed since January 2007 and i am on insulin since then .The only problem that i have is that i am not able to gain weight at all. I have a constant weight of 54 kgs since the last one year and there has been no gain at all.

I am very lean and worried about my health. Currently my fasting blood sugar is around 160 and the PP is aornud 230.

Not sure what diet should i follow. What is the kind of diet should i follow and do i need to start excercise and going to the gym to gain weight and muscle.

Please suggest as i am really looking forward to your suggestion

Thanks and regards
Greesh

I am not a doctor, but one of the volunteers for today.  I think I need some more information:  How old are you--if you are young and very active you could be burning off more calories than you are consuming.  Are you male or female--males can consume more calories than females,  How tall are you--are you too thin or do you fall into the normal range for your height.  How much weight do you want to gain.
Your sugars seem a little high.  I wonder if you lower your blood sugars you might be able to put on some weight.  If your blood sugar levels are too high you lose weight because your body is not getting what it needs and you are frequently urinating.

Have you looked closely at your diet?  Are you eating a well balanced diet-fruit and vegetables, protein, grains, and a little fat. You might want to visit a dietician, someone who can help you make good food choices in the right amount-serving size or portions are important.   A dietician looks closely at what you are eating and tries to work with you and get you on the right track, taking into account your likes and dislikes.
Exercise is a good way to keep your blood sugars under control.  It does not have to mean going to the gym, but can mean taking a walk or choosing an activity that gets your body moving.
