Not sure if I have diabetes

by mianna, Oct 25, 2007 12:00AM
I'm not 100% sure if I have diabetes, because I talked with my mom about it and she says I might just be a little paranoid. My dad has diabetes (I think type 1), and I am showing most of the symptoms. My blood glucose level has been 200-220 for the past 12 hours. I am unsure what to do now other than to keep a close eye on my glucose levels, and log how I am feeling

Hello, mianna.  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes.  Your glucose level is cause for concern, but you don't mention what the other symptoms are that you're seeing.  There is a simple check that can be done at your doctor's office, I'd recommend you ease your concerns by scheduling an appointment.  Good luck.

To: Thank you for your advice
I appreciate the advice. The symptoms I am experiencing are the fatigue, extreme thirst, frequent urination, and I've had stomach cramps. It is hard for me to tell about the extreme hunger, because I have an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa), therefore I ALWAYS think I eat too much. I have just recently fully recovered for about 6 months, but I still struggle. I am very scared if I do have diabetes, because I know that these 2 disorders together are a lethal combination.

The following lab values are the American Diabetes Association practice guidelines for the diagnosis of diabetes:
# A random plasma glucose  value of 200 mg/dl (11.11 mmol/L) or more (in the presence of diabetes symptoms).
# A plasma glucose value of 126 mg/dl (7 mmol/L) or more.
# An oral glucose plasma glucose value of 200 mg/dl (11.11 mmol/L) or higher at 2 hours post-glucose load.

With the symptoms you have and your blood glucose levels (assume you washed hands before testing) you should see your doctor as soon as possible.

Good luck,
Jane

Just to add that the second point in the quote above,

"# A plasma glucose value of 126 mg/dl (7 mmol/L) or more."

should read

# A *fasting* plasma glucose value of 126 mg/dl (7 mmol/L) or more.
