Dear Variety,
I'm sorry your husband is having such a rough time. It sounds like he is making every effort. I'm not a doctor, just the mother of a type-1 teen who has thusfar had excellent control, so I don't have a lot to add except to say keep trying and stay positive. Is he getting regular exercise? Monitoring his diet?  Has he tried a pump?

Does anyone out there have thoughts on this?

Is he overweight? This could be causing him to be insulin resistant, and if so, he may need to take some type 2 medications to help his body use the insulin he is injecting. Another thought is that he may need to temporarily go on a low-carb diet to help lower the blood sugar levels if for some reason the insulin alone is not doing the job. Most type 1 folks respond easily to insulin, so insulin resistance seems to be the first thing I would ask his doctor about. There are people who have a combination of true type 1 autoimmune issues plus insulin resistant type 2 issues. If his current doctor is not able to help him, I encourage you to perhaps try a new doctor who may be able to better help him.

i have had diabetes for 16yrs. my sugars are out of control too. due to my poor control, i have many complications now. does your husband have any complications? i just take alot of humalog to bring it down when it is up and try to low carb foods. it is really hard to get control of diabetes, i know. i am about to get the insulin pump to see how it works for me. maybe your husband should try it. ecspecially the one with the 24 hour blood sugar monitor on it, that's the one i am getting. i wish i had some advice for you, but i am trying myself to get in control, but keep trying  and don't give up. good luck to you and your husband!!!
