OmniPod Questions

by Kenzie12, Aug 24, 2007 12:00AM
Is anyone using the OmniPod?  My sister started using it a month and a half ago and she's had 3 pods fail (so far) and her PDM failed (and was promptly replaced).  I'm about to start on the OmniPod, not knowing that she was having problems.  I'm trying to find out if these are common problems with this particular system, or if she's just a one-off, maybe with a bad batch of Pods or something.  I'm the first patient my doctor will have going onto it, so he's not sure if these are normal, expected problems, and my sister's doctor was one of the people studying it originally, so her view point is more than a little biased.  ANY feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I personally am not a pump user, and I did some research on the OmniPod in order to respond to your question. One website states that the makers of the Omnipod claim only a 2 percent failure rate. One blogger wrote that she had suffered as high as a 10 percent failure rate, but that, after posting her criticism, the company contacted her and replaced her OmniPod and that she has had no trouble since then.

This particular pump system seems to be getting rave reviews, and there is a good article that explains the difference between this system and the traditional pump on the following website:

Personally, after reading these articles, I believe I would be happy to try it. If you have any troubles, do contact the company, for from what I have read, they are quick to respond. Any mechanical device is of course going to have an occasional problem, but the company seems to be responsive, from what I have read. Good luck to you!
