Protein shakes are totally fine, I've had them myself to supplement my Muay Thai training.  However, if you're type 2 and have a weight problem, be careful with the Calories.  A lot of protein powders and shakes also contain creatine and TONS of calories... which you do NOT want.

There are GREAT protein shakes with very few calories and carbs called Pure Protein - my favorite flavor is the Banana Cream which has only 160 calories, 1g fat and 2g of carbs.  They make bars too.  http://www.pureprotein.net/pages/productDetail.aspx?PID=64295

Good luck!
