SPIKE IN BLOOD SUGAR

by lws808, Jul 16, 2006 12:00AM
I WOKE UP WITH SOME BACK PAIN. I TOOK A NAPROXEN 500 MG AND WENT BACK TO SLEEP. WHEN I GOT UP A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER AND CHECKED MY SUGAR LEVAL, IT WAS AT 202. I NORMALLY RUN ABOUT 120 IN THE MORN. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT CERTAIN MEDS WILL CAUSE A SPIKE. IS THIS ONE OF THEM?

Hello,
As you may know, we're all volunteers here and none of us is a medical professional.  It would be a good idea to check with your physician if your elevated blood sugars persist.

Here's a website with reliable information about drugs, their proper usage, side effects, etc.
http://www.drugs.com
You'll find information about Naproxen and many other meds there.  I didn't see any info there about a blood sugar impact.

Many of us experience blood sugar spikes in response to stress, including pain.  If your "going back to sleep" caused you to sleep later than you normally do, you might consider checking your blood sugar at that time of day, in addition to when you wake up.

Many folks experience a "Dawn Phenomenon" where our blood sugars rise, even without eating.  Typically, this can be treated and treatment will vary depending on whether you're Type 1 or 2, and -- if you're Type 2, whether you use insulin or not.  Again, this is important to discuss with your doctor.

I hope the back pain subsided and that your blood sugar readings are back in the target range your doctor & you have worked out.
