Seizures - complications

by paddlefish, Nov 12, 2006 12:00AM
I am a 37-yr old, athletic Type 1 diagnosed approx. 10 years ago.  Six months ago I was camping and had a hypoglycemic grand mal seizure that lasted approx. 1 1/2 hours (the person I was with did not know what to do).

I won't go into the short-term complications I experienced.  However, I still experience weakness and mild pain in my lungs and periodic studdering.

What are the long-term complications of a sustained seizure?  Why do my lungs still hurt!

Thank you so much!

Dear Paddlefish,
As you may know, we are volunteers and not medical professionals, so we can't give diagnoses and are ill equipped to explain medical complications with any certainty.  Be sure to keep in contact with your doctors to check out anything you read (here or elsewhere).

Nonetheless, we're all very experienced with diabetes and have boatloads of compassion and empathy for your struggles.  During a seizure, folks sometimes injure themselves by hitting something, biting themselves, or by inhaling fluid.

I have found a few reliable sources of info about complications from grand mal seizures.  Perhaps these have some useful points to discuss with your physician -- I strongly recommend that you seek out good medical attentionl; if you're not satisfied with your current doc's interest, find someone else who'll work with you.

Good luck; I hope your symptoms ease up soon, too.
