Teen who seems to be "out of it"

My granddaughter has been sick with a bad cold and flu for the past couple weeks and today wouldn't get up until nearly 2 pm.  When she did she was confused and didn't seem to know how to talk and was very legthargic.  Parents have taken her to the ER.  I'm wondering if anyone has a clue what it might be.  She is 14 and was diagnosed at age 8.  Recently her numbers have been all over the place.

Anytime anyone with diabetes is sick blood sugars can go from extreme highs to extreme lows without any real cause. The body is fighting the illness and thus usually doesn't have the ability to fight the diabetes as well. Most doctors will advise to check BS more often when sick for this reason. Diabetics have to be twice as healthy as the average person for this reason.
