Hi gordiesmom,

First, I need to tell you that I am not a medical professional, I am simply a volunteer and mother of a child living with type 1 diabetes. Any advice / input I give you is based solely on knowledge obtained through my personal experience. My son was diagnosed over 6-1/2 yrs. ago at the age of 3. My sister also has type 1 and was diagnosed over 8-1/2 yrs. ago at the age of 24.

Signs of High Blood Sugar include:

- hunger
- extreme thirst
- frequent urination / large amounts of urine
- weight loss

(These are only a few of the symptoms.)

The extreme hunger and thirst, as well as frequent urination are what I really noticed in my son right before he was diagnosed.  I then went to his Pediatrician and requested to have him tested.

Here is what I would do:

Make an appointment ASAP.  This disease is serious and cannot go untreated, if you do have type 1 diabetes.  Please call your physician and get tested for type 1 immediately.  You need to bring the thirst, hunger and weight loss to your doc's attention and say you want to be tested for type 1 diabetes.

I urge you to do this immediately, so if you do have type 1, you can start treating it.

Please re-post.  You are very intelligent to notice these symptoms and need not ignore them.

If you are not diagnosed wiht type 1 diabetes, you need to then ask your doctor what other illnesses, etc. could possibly be causing these symptoms and get tested.  Be assertive.

Regards,
SS

I'm not a physician, but the symptoms you describe are classic symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.  It is also not uncommon that hypoglycemia preceeds diabetes.

Please give a call to your physician right away.  If you do have diabetes, you can avoid allowing things to get worse, and you can avoid a hospital stay if you act quickly now.  Drink plenty of water to flush your system of ketones and do your best to avoid concentrated sweets (like you had to do for hypoglycemia).  Try to avoid high fat/high carbo (like fries & chips, pizza & mexican foods) until you discover what's going on and can get it taken care of.

College is often a fun but stressful time.  I went thru college, grad schools, world travel, etc. with diabetes.  It does give us more to think about, but it doesn't change one bit our ability to fully pursue our dreams.
