best time to test

by alotofbraden, Nov 24, 2007 12:00AM
He does seem to drink a lot but I thought it was only water that they want to drink he does not like to drink water all he wants to drink are sweet drinks like juice. What is considered to be eating a lot with a five year old boy. He does want to eat all the time and they seem to be things that are high in carbs or sugar. But I thought this was common in growing boys. Is it the same for kids as adults where the healthy range is 80 -120 or is this just for adults. i will test him with my dad's kit should I test him first thing in the morning like my dad and grandma or is there a better time of day to test children.
Thank- you for all the help.

A test first thing in the morning would be a truer test for his resting, or fasting glucose level. Normal people do have blood sugar levels that go up and down all day, so testing several hours after meals makes finding his 'norm' harder. Hence, the usual request for a fasting glucose test when a doctor does lab work. Normal for both adults and children is considered to be about what you wrote in your question, although different doctors give slightly different levels, some higher and some slightly lower (my own doctor gave me a slightly wider range as 'normal': 70-126). This gives you a BALLPARK idea of what is considered normal. If in any doubt, I would suggest that you get him tested by a doctor's lab. A lab test is probably going to be more accurate than a home test.
