I have a student who has had moderate ketones for 2 days.  She came to school yesterday am and was sent home, then is absent today.  Mom said that she has given extra insulin to correct the ketones and high sugar.  How long can we go with moderate ketones?

Hi.  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes.  Any ketones are bad, and need to be dealt with immediately with insulin.  Depending on the reason for the ketones, they can last that long, but it's not typical.  3 days is a long time to go with ketones.  When ketones last that long, the amount of insulin given to treat it must be increased until the ketones go away.  Simply giving extra is not enough.  Thanks for being so concerned about your student.
