concerned mom of diabetic son

by jagfan1995, Nov 05, 2007 12:00AM
My son was diagnosed with JD when he was 15.  He started out doing very well by keeping track of his sugars and taking his insulin as he was supposed to.  Then he got very angry and choose not to take care of himself anymore.  Needless to say he ended up in the hospital a number of times.  Now he takes his insulin but never checks his sugar level.

He is now an adult and doesn't have any health insurance but gets his insulin through the health clinic and Walmart for $20 a vial.  I think if he had test strips to check his glucose levels he would check.  He understands how important it is now and is getting scared due to some numbing in his toes.  My questions is "does anyone know how he can get test strips at a very discounted rate or even free?"

Thanks for you help, a very concerned Mom.

I am not sure, but I do know if you contact your local JDRF office they will be able to help you.  Go to www.Jdrf.org and look on the site.  One of the options should help you.  Online Diabetes Support Team (ODST) or they mention clinical trials.

Yes, do go to the www.jdrf.org website and click on the Online Diabetes Support Team link. If you fill out the form that appears on the page that pops up, asking for help with free or discounted test strips, a staff member who specializes in answering this kind of question will help you. Do tell them what state you live in, for location sometimes makes a difference as far as what state-supported helps are available.

Contact your local county health services and express your concerns they will help you with your problem in more ways than 1. He may need counseling which they can help with. If he gets around kids with his problem he can relate. Group therapy is great if you can just get him there.
