diabetes early on set or honeymmon

by sherry2002, Jun 24, 2007 12:00AM
I have a 7 yr old son that is ADHD he is 4ft 3in and 59lbs. He has some of the signs of diabetes Thirst, urination, moody, and weight  loss. I spoke to the doctor about this in August of 2006 so we started to monitor him. This month he lost about 6 lbs. So I started checking his blood sugar a lot. His fasting rage was  98 to 193. His range before meals was anywhere from 74 to as high as 193. I also took his levels sometimes while sleeping and had one as low as 69 and as one as high as 153. When I took him back to the doctor he had large ketones in his urine. So they ran some labs. His A1c came back 5.2 witch is good. The doctor thinks he may be in the honeymoon stage or is at early on set of type 1. They did not put him on any melds. at this time. Has anyone else had similar experiences Honeymoon or early onset? How long do we have before thing go one way or the other? At this point I feel like we are in a boat with a hole in the bottom, in the middle of the ocean being circled by sharks.
Thank you for all of your help in advance.

I am not a physician, but the mom of a type one diabetic.  I would suggest that you take your son to an endocrinologist and have him tested for type one diabetes.   Below are the signs for type one diabetes.  The honey moon is when the body is still producing insulin, but not a lot - usually when you are in the honeymoon phase you are on insulin just small doses.

My daughter was able to control her blood sugars for about2 weeks after she was diagnosed, before she went on insulin.    The honeymoon phase can last from few days to years everyone is different there is no specific time.

Once you get diagnosed properly and start insulin your boat will stay a float.

The symptoms may occur suddenly, and include one or more of the following:

Extreme thirst
Frequent urination
Drowsiness, lethargy
Sugar in urine
Sudden vision changes
Increased appetite
Sudden weight loss
Fruity, sweet, or wine-like odor on breath
Heavy, labored breathing
Stupor, unconsciousness
If you think you have diabetes, call a doctor immediately, and drink fluids WITHOUT SUGAR to prevent dehydration.

If your son has several of these symptoms I would recommend that you discuss it with your doctor ASAP, as if not taken care of your son can go into ketoacidosis , which can be very serious, causing a coma. The symptoms may occur suddenly, and include one or more of the following:
