excessive sugar taste

by shakmoh, Feb 16, 2006 12:00AM
I have recently been diagnosed to have a diabetes. my doctor prescribed me metformin diabetic medication. since I started taking the medication, my favorite drinks, like snapple ice tea, taste all sugar ( extreme sweetness) that I could not take more than one or two zip. what is going on?

I'm not sure if the mediacation has affected your taste buds.  I have Type I diabetes and have always been on insulin.  However, I do notice that when I eat something even slightly sweet, I notice it more than others might, just because I am not used to eating any sugar.  I don't know if your increased sensitivity to sweetness is caused by the reduction of sugar in your diet due to the diabetes.  I also don't know if the Snapple you are talking about is regular or sugar free.  If it is the sugar free variety, they do taste sweeter to some people than the regular ones.  The only thing I can recommend is to dilute it with some plain water.  That will probably be better for you anyway and go twice as far.

Thank you for your reply, but i am more interested in the medical changes of this problem so i have a better information about my diabetic condition. for example, before the medication, I did not have this problem (excessive sweetness)while drinking the same snabble. what caused the change medically in terms of sugar level in my body?
