Hi, I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes.  Any time you start messing with how the body processes energy as a diabetic, you risk hypoglycemia and other risks.  I would suggest that you not do anything without first consulting your endocrinologist.

Another thought is to perhaps talk to the pharmacists at your local drugstore. Sometimes they have more information on side effects of drugs than the doctors do. And most pharmacists are more than willing to share from their knowledge.
