high blood levels after eating

by pandora5775, Nov 27, 2006 12:00AM
Hi.  I've never posted here before.  I have had some concerns about my son lately.  Three days ago I noticed he was drinking a lot and had been for several days.  He kept telling me his legs felt wiggly and he was tired.  I really didn't think much about it.  He had eaten some peanut butter crackers, some candy, 2 pieces of shrimp and some pop.  He normally doesn't eat this way, but it was the day after thanksgiving andwe were out and about.  Anyways, after just eating lunch I talked to a family member and remarked how thirsty he had been lately.  She wanted to test his sugar level and we did.  It was 252.  A few hours later he had a sandwich to eat and half of a bottle of pink lemonade.  I tested him again 30 minutes after eating and it was 156.  Approximately 2 hours later he came in complaining of dizziness and wiggly legs.  I tested him and it was 211.  The next day it was ok except for once it was 190. yesterday and today he seems to be fine.  I called his doctor's office, and they think this is all no big deal.  Am I overreacting to want them to run some test?  His level is always between 76-83 first thing in the morning.  Is that good or too low?  Thanks for any help I get.

i am not aphyscian, but the mom of a type one diabetic.  here are the usually symptonms and warning sighs of type one diabetes:

Warning Signs of Type 1 Diabetes (these may occur suddenly)
Extreme thirst
Frequent urination
Sudden vision changes
Sugar in urine
Fruity, sweet, or wine-like odor on breath
Increased appetite
Sudden weight loss
Drowsiness, lethargy
Heavy, labored breathing
Stupor, unconsciousness
blurred vision

If your child exhibits one or more of these symptoms, call a doctor immediately.

there is  a blood test that your pedeatrican can run.that will tell if he is diabetic,  he might also test your sons urine.

it is not easy to tell from readings after eating as everones body  breaks dwon fooed and thethe typres of food differently.

IFr you are concerned i would talk your son to the doctorimmedieately and ask demand that they test him for diabetes.

I hope this helps. PLease let us know how things went

another ting, he recently lost some weight.  About 8lbs. even though he was eating fine.  Also, he has had these dizzy spells and wiggly legs off and on for a couple of months but not frequently.  Maybe 3-4 times.  The doctors told me he was fine and there was nothing to worry about.  I just feel like something is going on.

I think this warrants some investigation.

You MUST be the advvocate for your  child and insist that they test for dabetes, ans anything else that could cause these symptoms.

I totally agree with the advice that has been given to you. Most articles that discuss normal ranges of blood sugar for people who are not diabetic list the range of "normal" as being between about 70-140. I believe that some doctors consider a blood sugar higher than about 150 after a meal as diabetic. So your son's sugar levels in the 200's do warrant some tests. We wish you the best.
