infertility/pump therapy/PCOS?

by amae3601, Jul 12, 2005 12:00AM
Im a 26 year old type I diabetic who was dx'd at the age 13.
I am married, and trying to become pregnant.  I started using an insulin pump aout 6 months ago, and have DRAMATICALLY reduced my A1C's to about 6.5...  I have started to become vey serious about taking care of myself.  (I neglected my health for a decade)
My periods are irregular, and usually not very heavy, and I've been trying to figure out what kind of testing I can done to see why I'm having infertility problems.
One thing I've been reading about is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
I'm not if thats something that would cause infertility in a type 1 diabetic...?
I know that a common symptom is insulin resistence and increased testosterone.
(I'm Definately insulin resistant)  I take approx. 140-170 units daily via my pump.
I also have a few other  symptoms:
-weight gain or obesity, usually carrying extra weight around the waist  (Over the past 1 1/2 years I have gained 60 pounds, and now I weigh 230)
-infrequent menstrual periods, no menstrual periods, and/or irregular bleeding
-infertility or inability to get pregnant
I have read that metaformin taken along with insulin can increase menstration/ovulation.
So this is something I'm very interested in.....  and would like to get some testing done.  Any suggestions?  Inspirtation?

Hello amae3601,
I am one of the volunteers here.  I am not a medical professional, so you should always seek a doctor's advice when there is a question or problem.

My son now 10 was diagnosed at age 3.

Congratulations on your GREAT A1C!

Here is a link that tells a lot about PCOS:
http://my.webmd.com/content/article/4/1680_51208?src=Inktomi&condition=Health%20Topics%20A-Z

This (below) is something I found on the page above.

"Women who are diabetic or who have a problem with their adrenal glands, thyroid gland, or pituitary gland can develop symptoms of PCO, but technically not have the condition. Make sure you ask your doctor to rule out these conditions before you begin any treatment for PCO."

I am sorry I cannot give you an inspirational story.  I would talk to both your endocrinologist, as well as your OBGYN and request testing.  At least if you can find an answer as to why it is hard for you to conceive, yoou can hopefully find treatment or a solution.

As I am sure you know, there are many type 1 diabetics who have successful pregnancies and healthy babies.

The link I mentioned above has information that might be helpful.

Make your doctors appointments and bring a list of questions with you.

I am sorry I could not be of more help.

Keep us posted.
